Aberdare Walking Safari

  • Day 1:  Aberdare National Park
    This morning we pick you from your hotel and drive to Aberdares National Park for wildlife viewing in the lower forested zone popularly referred to as the Salient. Animals to see include the elephant, black rhino, leopard, baboon, black and white Colobus monkey, sykes monkey etc. The park is also rich in alpine flora and fauna, and scenic features including magnificent waterfalls, and over 250 species of birds including the Jackson's Francolin, sparrow hawk, goshawks, eagles, sunbirds and plovers. Overnight at Reedbuck Campsite.

    Day 2: Aberdare National Park
    Guided walk along the Kiandongoro Nature Trail. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Aberdares and the abundant flora and fauna. Tour the thunderous Karuru and Chania waterfalls. Karuru waterfalls drop down 273 metres. Birdlife is prolific, with over 250 species of birds recorded including the Jackson's Francolin, sparrow hawk, goshawks, eagles, sunbirds etc. Stay overnight at Reedbuck campsite

    Day 3: Aberdare National Park
    After breakfast, start a 5-6 hours hike through a track dotted with giant heather, tussock grass, open forest glades and rose wood to arrive at Honi river. The hike offers opportunities to encounter with buffaloes, elephant and many antelopes. Picnic lunch is served enroute. Dinner and overnight at tented camp.

    Day 4: Aberdare National Park
    Early breakfast and hike for 5-6 hours through forest and lastly moorland on the way up the Road head, then to the mouth of Honi river. Todays hike offers adequate acclimatization in preparation for the following day peak attempt. Dinner and overnight at tented camp.

    Day 5: Aberdare National Park
    Hike up the Satima peak (4001m) taking 2 - 3 hour to arrive in time for an African dawn. On clear day there is an opportunity to observe Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro on the horizon and even the surrounding vicinity of Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and the Daiga hills. Descent back to the roadhead to connect with a transfer to Mt. Kenya area where we spend the night near Sirimon Park Gate.

    Day 6: Mount Kenya National Park
    After breakfast transfer to Sirimon park gate at 2400m and start off Mount Kenya climb. Be ready for an easy to intermediate trek for 3 hours to Judmaier camp through lush, ever green rain forest, thick bamboo forest and giant heather meadows. Picnic lunch served on the way. Dinner and overnight at the Judmaier camp 3300m. [9kms]

    Day 7: Mount Kenya National Park
     Early start, trek into Sirimon valley and into the beautiful Likii north valley 5 hours trekking through meadows rich in flora. Lunch at the camp, relax and explore the Likii valley around the camp site as you overlook the peaks of Tereri and Sendeyo on 3990m. Dinner and overnight at the camp.[8kms]

    Day 8: Mount Kenya National Park
    Early start, trekking into the Mackinder’s valley, one of the largest and most impressive U- valleys on the mountain. Trek for 4-5 hours in intermediate terrain, lunch at the camp as you pitch your tents at the very foot of the central peaks Batian/Nelion. The camp is located at 4200m with the most scenic views surrounding us. Have dinner and overnight at the camp. [8kms]

    Day 9: Mount Kenya National Park
    The ascent start’s at 2 am. 3-4 hours steep and demanding climb towards the peak. Reach the top at 4985m by sun rise. Enjoy the moment, the breath taking views, the feeling of being at the top of the world …on a clear day you might even see Mount Kilimanjaro! We descend via the south west ridge through Austrian hut, 2 hours trek to Mackinder’s camp for breakfast. Relax and celebrate the ascent. Short excursion around Mackinder’s 4300m.Dinner and overnight at the camp. [8kms]

    Day 10: Nairobi
    Breakfast and a long but fairly easy trek down through meadows of giant heather via the reputed vertical bog after 2-3 hrs get to metrological station at 3048m for lunch. And proceed further down to gate station for another 2 hours trek for the end of the adventure. Transfer to Nairobi.
