Riftvalley Wanderer

  • Samburu/Mt. Kenya/ Nakuru/ Bogoria/ Baringo/ Nairobi

Day 1:- Samburu – Buffalo Springs National Reserve

Depart Nairobi this morning and drive north to the fertile Central Highlands. We drive past Timau on the slopes of Mt. Kenya before descending the Mt. Kenya massif to the low lying town of Isiolo, gateway to the Northern Frontier. Arrive at Buffalo Springs National Reserve late afternoon with game drive en-route to our campsite. The reserve is located on the fringe of the arid northern region of Kenya within the territory of the Samburu pastoralists. Due to it’s location it has wildlife that is rare elsewhere in the country. These animals include the Gerenuk antelope (eating bushes whilst standing up on their hind legs), Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s  Zebra, Somali Ostrich,  Reticulated giraffe and perhaps elephant bathing in the river or crocodile basking on the mud flats, not to mention numerous species of birds including Kenya’s smallest bird of prey, the Pygmy Falcon. Overnight at camp.

Day 2: – Samburu National Reserve

We have a full day to explore the reserve with morning and afternoon game drives. Relax at camp during the heat of the day. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 3: – Mt. Kenya Area

We pack up camp this morning and return to the main road to continue on the road through Isiolo and Nanyuki to Naro Moru then to our campsite in time for lunch. After some rest we can take a walk into the forest to visit some caves, reputed to be the hide-out of Mau Mau fighters during the Kenya "Emergency".  Later in the evening we return to camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park

We depart for Lake Nakuru National Park which is famous for its bird life, particularly the multitude of Lesser Flamingos that often form a pink fringe around the lake and are a sight to behold. The park is also a rhino sanctuary and a home to other mammals like leopard, buffalo, lion, colobus monkey, giraffe etc. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park

We have a full day at this park. Our game drives in the park may produce a leopard returning to his daytime hideout, many waterbuck, warthogs, hippo, buffalo, Rothschild giraffe, vervet monkeys, bohor reedbuck and other species of wildlife. There are many rhinos in the park. Dinner at camp and overnight under canvas with the sounds of the African night all round us.

    Day 6: Lake Baringo

Early morning game drive followed by breakfast and then drive to Lake Baringo where we will walk along the base of nearby cliffs and along the lake shore. Maybe take a boat (boat hire not included) out on the lake to visit areas otherwise inaccessible on foot to see some of the numerous crocodiles and hippo. Lunch, dinner and overnight at camp.

    Day 7: Lake Bogoria

After breakfast we depart for Lake Bogoria National reserve. A visit to the hot springs or walk along the lakeshore in the afternoon helps us to appreciate the scenery. The hot springs and geysers spew boiling fluids from the earth’s insides – keep your distance. There is also a host of bird and wildlife that call this area their home. We should see some flamingos and if lucky, the elusive Greater Kudu. This lake is one of the few remaining areas in Kenya where they are still seen regularly.

Day 8:  Nairobi / End of safari

After breakfast we depart for Nairobi stopping on the way for lunch. On arrival at Nairobi, we will transfer you to the airport or hotel in Nairobi.
